What do Information Technology Consultants do?
Question by Emma C: What do Information Technology Consultants do?
I’m trying to tackle on the mentorship program my hs offers, my first choice being management consulting. However, that was unavailable and my coordinator suggested information technology consulting instead.
Anyone know EXACTLY what IT consultants do?
Wikipedia’s info was too bland and impersonal for me and every time I google it I get a firm website instead.
Ideally, an answer from anyone who has somewhat of an insight in this field in terms of the objective, everyday procedure, etc will be greatly appreciated!

First congratulations on the ambitious career choice, consulting is a demanding field.
IT consultants basically do the same everyday things that managemetn consultants do:
-they join projects and work with their co-workers in resolving the client’s request for consultation in improving a business fuction (in the case of IT consultants, this means computer and technology related challenges).
-they travel to meet clients, gather data and information, and work on their group projects to meet the client demands.
The key question for most people interested in consulting is:
are you willing to travel and feel like you’re almost never home during your employment? There are only some consulting jobs that involve limited travel, but for the most part, those are the job options. Even if you find a local client, you will eventually want to (or in some cases, have to) move on as the average person does not stay in one place their entire lives nowdays.
To summarize simply:
Research management consultants, and you will know what IT consultants do, main difference is that it involves consultations on computer and techonology, programming, etc…. Think business world, team projects, extreme competitiveness (and be ready for “backstabbing” as some people call the cut-throat competition), but a very well paying, respected, and challenging career with a LOT of travel involved.
